“My life is flashing before me”: Bill Irwin gets it!
Today’s mail brought back my custom Bill Irwin collage, signed and personalized by Bill himself. I sent it to his current Broadway play, The Imaginary Invalid, hoping for an autograph. What came back also included a message that tells me he understood exactly what I was trying to create.
“My life is flashing before me”
Bill addressed the collage to me, thanked me for my note, and then wrote the line that made this return so special:
“My life is flashing before me”
He gets it!
When I create one of my custom 8×10 designs, I want to celebrate the person’s career. I bring together different roles, different eras, and familiar faces from their work so they can look at the finished piece and see something personal—a little journey through the life they’ve spent entertaining people.
That’s what makes his comment mean so much to me. I read it as recognition of exactly what I hoped this collage would do: bring those memories together in one place. For me, it’s a tribute to someone I’ve followed for years. For him, those pictures represent parts of his own life. His words made that connection feel real.
From Popeye to The Odyssey
I’ve followed Bill’s career since Popeye, the 1980 film starring Robin Williams, in which Bill played Ham Gravy. That’s a long history of watching a performer turn up in new and unexpected places, and it’s part of what made designing this piece so enjoyable.
A familiar face in Whoville
Another memorable stop along the way was How the Grinch Stole Christmas in 2000. Bill played Lou Lou Who, Cindy Lou Who’s father, alongside Jim Carrey’s Grinch. With the glasses, the Who hairstyle, and that expressive face, it’s another wonderful example of how completely he can step into a character. That chapter of his career belongs right here alongside the others.
The Cyclops in The Odyssey
This very year, he played the Cyclops, Polyphemus, in Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey. Going from the world of Popeye to a giant from Greek mythology says a lot about the range of his work and the physical imagination he brings to a role.
Seeing those chapters side by side is the whole point of the collage. It lets me honor the performer across the years, instead of choosing just one moment from a career that has given me so many memories.
A return from Broadway
I mailed my design to Bill at The Imaginary Invalid, his current Broadway production at the Todd Haimes Theatre in New York. He stars as Argan in his own adaptation of Molière’s comedy, directed by Brandon J. Dirden and presented by Roundabout Theatre Company.
TTM stands for through-the-mail autograph collecting: sending a letter and an item in the hope that the recipient will sign it and send it back. Every return is exciting, but a personal response like this adds something that no design can supply on its own.
I put the tribute together. Bill added the words that made it complete.
Thank you, Bill, for taking the time to sign my collage and for the wonderful note. Knowing that this design brought your career back to you in that way is about the best response I could have hoped for.
